Weekend(ish) Update: I Survived!

So I spent most of Memorial Day in a catatonic state in my son’s room, lying face down on his foam play-mat in a drooling stupor – an expected by-product of the Spring wedding season. But quite honestly, I loved every, single minute of it. Sure, the lap-top that ran our photo booth crashed one day before wedding #1, but we got that quickly sorted out (ie. frantic purchase of new laptop shortly after drop-kicking the old one). Then my secondary camera nose-dived onto the ground during wedding #2, but thankfully the filter was our only casualty. So much had happened in those 48 hours that I was practically bullet-proof by the time wedding #3 rolled around. But of course, all three weddings carried on as usual…because we’re clearly just that awesome :).

There is a silver lining to all of this, aside from surviving these past two weeks and emerging relatively unscathed. I got two new cameras! Feast your eyes on these two delicious specimens of awesomeness:

While I’m tempted to ditch my 36MP monstrosity at weddings and opt for this more compact, lightweight 3MP alternative,
I’m going to err on the side of caution on this one :).

When my father joined the 21st century by going digital, his 35mm film cameras fell by the wayside. As I’ve gone through several upgrades to my gear these past few years, he’d been eyeing all of my doodads – especially since my brother casually suggested that I wasn’t using them anymore (gee thanks…). But for clarification’s sake (and we can chalk it up to my Chinese genes), none of my gear ever goes to waste and I’d squeeze the last bit of utility out of them till they burn into the ground :). Apparently, this apple didn’t fall too far from its tree because my dad’s had this camera for well over 30 years…and this sucker still works. It’s a cosmetic nightmare, but I’m absolutely amazed that this thing still works. Crazy!

I knew my dad had this guy stashed away somewhere, and when I asked him about it – he happily offered to trade this gem for one of my old battery grips. You’re kidding me, right? Needless to say, I ended up buying him a new one instead. It was the least I could do :).

Hope you guys had a great Memorial Day weekend! We now return to our regularly scheduled programming!

Ben

PS. Upon receipt of aforementioned battery grip, my dad unceremoniously put it back in its box and stored it away into his mystery storage area. Go fig.

Bonjour Montreal!

I wish I had paid more attention in high school french, instead of being such a delinquent trouble-maker. Three years of french, and the only thing I had to show for it was my (in)ability to order a hot dog at a corner bistro in Paris. Shame on me :).

Karis of Ben Lau Photography sits inside a restaurant in Montreal.

The last time I visited Canada was in 2001: Niagara Falls for our family Christmas vacation. My lips were chapped for nearly three months. A visit in the late spring however, has been an entirely pleasant experience.

Per the bride’s request, we visited Old Montreal in preparation for the bridal session on her wedding day.
Scouting is one of the most favorite parts of my job :).

I’ve always wanted to photograph a solitary red bicycle on a street corner. Thank you, Montreal :).

Listen lady. If you don’t see me with my gimungo camera trying to take a picture for the last 15 minutes, you got yourself a one-way ticket to my blog :). On a slightly different note, I loved everything about this street. We don’t get many cobblestone streets in New York City that are clean with graffiti-less walls.

Not sure what I loved more – the narrow, winding, cobblestone streets, or the architectural splendor that surrounded us.

I’ve always wanted to have one of my brides running around a fountain with her soon-to-be husband, while a flock of pigeons flew off in a confused chatter. We were going to totally rock these bridal portraits!

But nevertheless, we never did make it to Old Montreal on the wedding day afterall :). Lesson learned? There’s no such thing as ever being too over-prepared for your clients, especially when it comes to scouting locations. Wedding days are living, breathing, and malleable events that have minds of their own. We ended up doing their portraits elsewhere, but I’m a firm believer that spontaneity is the spice of life. Then of course, there’s another positive to come out of this: my next Montreal bride (and groom) are going to have some pretty frigg’n awesome locations for their bridal portraits :).

[Engagement] Yumi & Alan – Brooklyn, NY (Sneak Peek)

This week starts one of the busiest weeks I’ll ever have this year. It’s one of the final weeks of Spring here on the East Coast, and I’ve already started an inventory of indoor locations where I’ll be shooting in 120 degree weather. But of course, Yumi and Alan didn’t have to worry about that; they picked once of the nicest days I’ve ever experienced this season. It was a mild day, with a cool breeze swirling around the cobblestone streets of Vinegar Hill. And truth be told, Vinegar Hill had been in my inventory for some time; so when Yumi suggested this location for their engagement session, I had to restrain myself from doing cartwheels around the office :).

This is why :).

As some of you may already know, we just got back from Montreal yesterday. But there’s no time to decompress today as we’re heading right back out to my old stomping grounds of Washington DC in just a few short hours. This week’s going to be a doozy :). Hope you guys had a fantastic weekend and a fabulous Monday. I know I will, I’m getting a free car wash today!

[Wedding] Lauren & Justin – CuisinArt Resort & Spa in Anguilla (Sneak Peeks)

I love traveling, almost as much as I love photography. Despite all the stamps I’ve accumulated in my passport, I’ve always had this lingering fear that I won’t make it past customs one of these days. There’s a myth that suggests the benefits of following Asian people during the security screen, mostly because we generally check all our luggage and we possess this strange affinity for slip-on shoes. Not this Asian guy – when the conveyor belt stops during the security screening, they’re looking at all that metal and glassware jammed into my bags (it never leaves my sight). Plus, it takes the strength of two elephants to remove just one of Karis’ boots. We totally fail as Asian travelers.

Most recently, I traveled to Anguilla for Lauren and Justin’s wedding, whose rehearsal dinner we recently showcased (fish tacos, yum!). Needless to say, I got there in one peace without much incident :).

The last one’s not my sharpest captures of the night, but certainly one of my favorites :).

With all of these sneak peeks, I promise you there’s a deluge of full posts coming your way. You’ve been warned, my friends! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and wish us luck on our adventures in Montreal this weekend! Can’t wait!

[Wedding] Hae-Yoon & Bernard – Snug Harbor (Sneak Peeks)

We kick off the Spring 2012 wedding season with the beautiful Hae-Yoon and the not-too-shabby Bernard on the gorgeous 83 acre grounds of Snug Harbor. Just a week prior to their wedding, we had scouted the area; the trees were still bare and the air was still crisp, remnants of a winter we New Yorkers/New Jersey-ers never had and wasn’t quite ready to go away. Whether by sheer luck or divine providence, we were blessed with bountiful sunshine and leaves/foliage/whatnot on Hae-Yoon and Bernard’s wedding day. We couldn’t be happier :).

Thank goodness those leaves came right on time, lest we have ourselves a Tim Burton-esque type of getaway.

Huh?  What?  That’s it?

Of course not!

Stay tuned, friends :).

[Engagement] Lisa & Kai – Williamsburg, NY

When Lisa and Kai mentioned they wanted to have their session in Williamsburg, I was absolutely thrilled. In my mind, I envisioned Lisa and Kai in a warm embrace as a downpour of skittles rained down from the sky…all while a paintball war was being waged around them. You guys will have to believe me when I say this: it was probably by far, the most colorful engagement session I had ever done. Plus, it never hurts when you have blue skies and miles of smiles all around :).

Lisa is probably one of the most organized brides I’ve ever met. She had notated every street corner that struck her fancy (on a previous scouting mission), which saved us a whole bunch of time just scouring each street, block by block. AWESOME.

Our start time was around lunch time, which is not always ideal for lighting. But we made it work :).

LOVE. IT.

Based on my interpretation, what they’re saying is that Williamsburg is very much like DUMBO, but everyone is bespectacled (four-eyes…get it? har-har) and wielding a can of spray-paint. I would say that’s a pretty accurate assessment, don’t you? *smirk*

This was as close to raining skittles as we could get :).

Lisa and Kai, thank you so much for stomping around Williamsburg with yours truly. Most importantly, thank you for giving me one of the best jumping photos I’ve ever captured! We hope you enjoy these images, and we look forward to getting you guys in front of our cameras again in a few more months! Congrats again!

FAQ: Why are engagement sessions so important?

Couples pose on the beach during their engagement session with Ben Lau Photography on Long Beach Island, NJ.

When I first got started in wedding photography, I would get all kinds of requests from my brides (grooms would occasionally have some of their own as well). I have, and still do, honor 99% of those requests. This was because I was overjoyed that somebody out there was willing to hire a fella who was just starting out; I was willing to do anything and everything…even if it meant potentially compromising my work in the end.  But of course, I’m no longer starting out and I know better now. I’ve been very fortunate enough that up to this point, my final deliveries have met/exceeded the expectations of our clients. But the thing is, our goal is to exceed client expectations every. single. time.

One of the most common requests that we receive during consultation is: “Can we cut the engagement session?”. Once upon a time, this was a possibility, partially because we didn’t know any better. Now they’re currently included as part of ALL our packages, but there’s a rhyme and reason for this.

It’s not about the images (per se).
I used to offer engagement sessions simply because that’s what I thought clients wanted: extra images to share with their friends and family. Therefore, I shot them like any of my other non-wedding portrait sessions. Of course, the sessions were fun and the photos came out nice. But when we got the clients in front of the cameras again, I noticed something was different; they were easier to shoot and required less direction from me. They knew their cues and exactly how I preferred to shoot, and I knew exactly how to push their buttons (red for “smile”, blue for “Blue Steel”, or pink for “Go Crazy”). This mutual understanding on the wedding day paid back its value in the final images A-THOUSAND-FOLD.

It’s all about the relationship.
Out of all the wedding vendors a bride (and groom) will hire for their wedding day, they will develop the closest and most intimate relationship with their photographers. This is especially true for us because it’s no secret I’m a stage-five clinger the moment we meet for the initial consultation (plus, I think I’m a nice guy…most of the time!). I will literally see EVERY single pore, wrinkle, unshaven hair on the clients after the images are captured over a period of two days, and I don’t think I could possibly get any more intimate than that (not without buying dinner first, at least). My familiarity with my clients along with their physical features, likes/dislikes and personality allows me to portray them in the truest and best light possible. Their comfort with me as their photographer allow those qualities to come out more freely, uninhibited, and sincerely.

It’s about trust.
This is earned when clients receive their final images from the engagement session, and realize my unorthodox methods of photography were all done for a greater good. First encounters (engagement sessions and weddings without engagements) with clients tend to be filled with skepticism because the images are still very abstract. They’ve seen what I can do with other people’s images, but they’re unsure, hesitant, and sometimes even resistant during this first encounter. It’s not until they finally get those images in their hands that they’ll feel confident we’ll be able to deliver the second time around.

Family, friends and guests will know who I am.
There is a 99% chance that most of the guests will have seen the photos from the engagement session, which means I would’ve already had my warm introduction to most of the people on the guest list. While I’d have no problems ordering complete strangers around (because I’m sure they’re all very nice and willing to comply…especially on a wedding day), a warm introduction allows me  to skip 18 spaces filled with giant red hotels and advance directly to Go. With all these formalities out of the way, I’m able to quickly acquire some of my most helpful allies on the wedding day (for family formals, informal group shots, etc – while the bride and groom are you know, busy…getting married!). Group portraits that would’ve taken 2 hours now only takes 15 minutes. Ta-da! Now go enjoy that open bar and delicious-looking hors d’oeuvres!

Of course, every wedding is different, and every couple is different (with the exception that Ben Lau Photography clients are all pretty frigg’n awesome!). Most importantly, nobody ever buys a car without a test drive, and nobody ever buys a home without a walk-through. They’re such gimungo purchases that it’d be foolish to go into those types of commitments without knowing what you’re getting yourself into. Engagement sessions are just as much for the photographers’ benefit as they are for the clients benefit. Everybody wins, and this is why engagement sessions will always be included with ALL our wedding packages. In the end, clients hire us because they enjoy our images which are produced using a very specific formula. Once this formula is broken, its final product may not always be guaranteed.

I hope this helps. If you guys have any more questions, please comment below!

Happy Monday everyone :). I look forward to sharing more of these FAQs with you guys in the future!

Lauren + Justin :: Anguilla, BWI :: Wedding Rehearsal

Here’s a fun fact: Lauren and Justin are actually the first of FIVE couples in their cluster of friends (whether directly or indirectly related) who’ve bestowed upon us the great honor of capturing their respective wedding days from now through 2013. At this rate, we’re going to be BFFs with all the guests by the time we get to the fifth wedding :).

But in any case, Lauren and Justin decided they would tie the knot in Anguilla – a familiar piece of paradise that’s always held a special place in their hearts. I was simultaneously happy and sad when they asked me to come along to capture this beautiful day for them. I was deliriously happy because I was getting a few more stamps in the ol’ passport, but a bit sad because I was going to be nowhere near beach-shape by their wedding day (and of course, I would be away from the wife and kid for 3 days and 2 nights…sniff, sniff). This brings us to the ultimate conclusion where I would be the fully clothed guy on the beach wearing a camera and a sexy farmer’s tan. OHHH YEAH!!!

Upon arrival at the CuisinArt Resort & Spa, I almost kinda half-expected my room to be filled with small kitchen appliances. However, I was surprised to learn that Lauren and Justin had generously set me up in a gimungo suite with this amazing view. I suppose this’ll do. I thought to myself :).

I rendez-vous’d with the rest of the guests who were already at the beach, throwing sand balls at each other.

There’s actually a funny story about how a Mexican restaurant ended up in Anguilla. Some tourist guy was in the mood for a taco, but couldn’t find one on the island. Long story short, he opened one up. BEST FISH TACOS EVER!

Korey + Eric :: Long Island, NY :: Engagement Session

Korey and Eric are probably one of the most carefree couples we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Their approach to life with a sense of adventure, laughter and candor made them a perfect fit for our style of work. No frills. No pretense. Just absolutely nothing…but pure, unadulterated love :). I remember receiving Korey’s first email as I was on my way out the door to another meeting. I could hear the elation in her voice when I confirmed my availability for their wedding date. By no coincidence, Korey and Eric snatched one of the last dates I had available for 2012. Everybody wins :).

Korey and Eric, congratulations on everything! We had a wonderful time wandering around your stomping grounds. You two are certainly two peas in a pod, and are the reasons why we enjoy what we do everyday. We can’t wait to see you guys in a few more weeks, and I hope you guys enjoy these images as much as we enjoyed capturing them. As for us here at BLP Headquarters, we’re so stoked about all the mileage and shutter-clicks we’re going to burn through these next few weeks. Stay tuned for more :).
