Many photographers prefer to shoot during the ephemeral golden skies that occur twice a day, but apparently I prefer shooting in the rain (as it would seem, based on this and my next few engagement sessions). Without sounding like I just had a healthy serving of sour grapes, I occasionally find these shooting conditions to be quite a blessing for a number of reasons:
- NYC in July is like trying to breathe through a sweaty armpit while getting beaten senseless with curling iron. I always welcome any respite from the heat and humidity, mostly because I’m blacklisted at most of the cool indoor shooting locations in NYC (and if I haven’t already, I soon will be!).
- Very few people enjoy playing in the rain. This means the streets are all ours! Bwahaha! (evil laugh)
- Cloudy skies buy us a few additional hours of good lighting. This is paramount for many natural-light photographers. Not to mention, it would be a death wish if I ever asked my wife to lug around all my lighting gear :).
- Umbrellas make fantastic accessories!

Kidding aside, I don’t actually shoot in the rain. But a little drizzle never hurt anybody :).

Miles of elevated tracks, and of course I make them stand in the gap…while it’s raining drizzling.

Coney Island hasn’t been this festive in over 50 years :).

Not to pat myself in the back or anything, but my sessions ARE typically filled with miles of smiles :).

Two takes, and they’re still smiling. These two are so awesome beyond words!

Thank goodness for umbrellas, empty boardwalks and weather-sealing on my gear :).

Confession: having them kiss while sitting on different horses worked much better in my pre-visualization than in actual practice.

True story: we waited 45 minutes for the Wonder Wheel to dry before we were allowed to board safely.
Apparently, they hadn’t heard about the death-defying stunts we had just pulled off while riding on the carousel.

Valaya and Johnny….ho-ly cow! What more can I say? You guys were just simply amazing and I can’t thank you enough for putting your absolute faith in my artistic tyrannical direction and frolicking in one of most desirable parts of Brooklyn with yours truly :). I feel honored to be able to get you guys in front of my camera once again in September! I hope you guys enjoy these as much as I did capturing them.
